My husband loves bread pudding with lemon sauce, but our youngest son is allergic to cinnamon, so when he is going to be eating with us I leave out the cinnamon and substitute nutmeg.

Bread Pudding with Lemon Sauce

Ingredients:

6 slices day-old bread, cut into 1/2 inch cubes
1 cup packed brown sugar
1 cup hot water
4 eggs, lightly beaten
2 cups warm milk
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/8 tsp. salt

Directions:

Place bread cubes in a greased 2-quart baking dish. Dissolve brown sugar in water and pour over the bread. Add sugar to the milk and heat until the sugar is dissolved. Stir several spoons of slightly beaten eggs into the milk mixture, then stir in the remaining eggs, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt.
Bake at 350° F. for 50-60 minutes or until a knife inserted near the center comes out clean. Serve warm with:

Lemon Sauce

Mix together 1/2 cup sugar, 2 tsp. cornstarch, and a dash of salt. Gradually add 1 cup of cold water, stirring constantly. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly until thick and clear. Stir small amount of hot mixture into 2 beaten egg yolks, return to hot mixture. Cook and stir 1 minute; remove from heat and add 2 teaspoons butter and 2 tablespoons lemon juice, pour over pudding.
