They say the way to a man's heart is through his stomach, and I believe it. When Sheldon and I started dating, I was working my way through college cooking in the cafeteria, and he was the music instructor. My ability to cook probably made me more attractive to him than my ability to play the piano. I learned to cook from my mother and grandmother and still have some of their recipes.

Sheldon was unable to eat a lot of foods until he was in Junior High School. But he started helping his mother in the kitchen before he was five. She would let him stand on a chair and "help" make cookies and bread. We still have a cookie recipe that he asked a church lady for when he was just in grade school.

Collecting recipes has always been a hobby of mine, and we love to try new dishes. Fifteen years of traveling with the college choirs and eating at church potluck dinners gave us ample opportunity to gather recipes from all over the country. My grandfather loved to bake breads, and he gave me his recipe for "Angel Biscuits". Sheldon's grandfather Vik came to Montana from Norway, and his mother's family came from Austria so they have passed on some great Norwegian and German recipes which we are happy to share.

Our two sons have become interested in cooking now that they are adults and have their own apartments. Lydell, the oldest, is an artist and is especially interested in the way a recipe looks. His first attempt at making a framed picture out of chocolate looked great but didn't fare too well when we tried transporting it from Texas to Illinois. Last summer he became interested in trying new rubs for barbecue, and also tried his hand at making homemade ice cream.

Jeremy, the youngest, is in college and works full time, so he likes to make things that are quick. He can make chili dogs, eggs, and Ramen noodles real well. He is willing to be my taste tester whenever he is at home, and makes a great pitcher of iced tea.
